Walton & Hersham v Hanworth Villa

Walton & Hersham finished last season’s campaign very strongly and rightly come into this season as one of the fancied teams, so an opening day visit to Stompond Lane was always going to be a test. After a good pre season we went into the game feeling confident that we could produce a good performance but things didn’t start to well.

W&H started the game quickly putting us under pressure right from the outset. With the season just 2 minutes old the ball fell to Malachi Thomas on the edge of the box, and his low drive was deflected into the net for the seasons opening goal in the Combined Counties Premier. The goal rattled us for a bit and if it wasn’t for a couple of bits of last ditch defending we would have found ourselves further behind. The boys rallied themselves however and, after 10 mins or so, we started to get a grip on the game.

Athan Smith-Joseph went close with a far post volley before we were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute when a Swans defender handled a shot from Cyril Ocansey. No doubt about the award, and no doubt about the outcome as Jack Buckle fired home to equalise. The remainder of the half was pretty even, but neither team produced any chances to trouble the goal so we went into the break level.

We began the second-half strongly. Adam Baigent sent a far-post header over from a left-side corner. Cyril then had a fine chance as he was found in space in the right of the box, but he spun to drive the ball across goal and wide.Jack Buckle went close with a good strike from 30 yards and the Swans keeper made a number of good saves to prevent us taking all 3 points.

All in all, I think that we can feel pleased with the performance. Walton are a good side but we more than held our own. If we can continue to improve from here we may be looking at a decent season. Another tough test on Tuesday when we entertain North Greenford United, at the Ranch, 19.30 kick off.
