With our injury list starting to finally shorten the boss had a good selection of players to chose from and the team looked settled from the first whistle. We had total control of the game until the 15th minute when our hosts took the lead with their first foray into our box when a long free kick from Jack Buckle caused hesitation in our defence and Pinder reacted first to force the ball home.

Despite the setback we continued to press Spelly back into the half but all our efforts were thwarted by the hard working home defence.

With half time upon us we got a bit of good fortune. With no concession to the atrocious conditions the ref awarded us a soft free kick just outside the box. Sam Merson took the kick, keeping the ball low on the wet surface, and the unfortunate keeper, would had a great game up until then, let the ball slip under him and we were level at the break.

With the weather worsening we continued to press after the restart and when Brandon Barzey put us in front after 74 minutes most of the watching Villains assumed that the points were in the bag but, with 10 mins to go Spelthorne, and McCalmon in particular, had other ideas. He scored twice in 5 minutes and all of a sudden the points had slipped from our hands. However the game still had a couple of twists left and the Merson brothers stepped up.

2 minutes into overtime Ben Merson pulled us level with an effort that seemed to take forever to cross the line. All square. We would happily taken that but 2 minutes later Sam Merson got his head to a “hail Mary” punt into the box from Jim Fenlon and his header found the net via the underside of the bar. Incredible scenes followed and the bar was buzzing after. What an ending.

Up into second spot. Home to Reading City on Saturday.
