A far post header, from Turnell Sinclair, in the 80th minute was enough to see us book an away fixture at near neighbours Bedfont Sports in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.
Make no mistake this was a very tough game against Fisher FC from the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, but we got off to a flying start when Geoff Twumasi scored with our 1st attempt after about 30 seconds. Great start, and did we need it.
Fisher played a quick passing game and they applied almost constant pressure, limiting us to the occasional counter attack. Our defense was holding strong though and we doubled our lead from one of our rare attacks in the 40th minute. This time it was Chis Regis turn to hit a super long range shot which gave the Fisher keeper no chance.
2 nil, a good result to take into the break, especially against the run of play. At least it would have been if we could have held out but the excellent Billy Brown pulled a goal back for the visitors with almost the last kick of the game. A good half by our guests but a good display from The Lord and his defence.
Within 5 minutes of the restart the tie was all square again, Brown with the equalising goal (didn’t see it so can’t provide any detail). The boss brought on the returning Luke Bersey to add a bit of steel to our midfield and the change made an almost instant difference. All of a sudden the space in midfield had gone. We started to get our foot on the ball and our passing game began forcing Fisher onto the back foot. This was much better, we were starting to have the best part of the tie for the first time.
Despite the strong wind both sides continued to pass the ball short and it made for an exciting game. We were now doing most of the pressing but the East London boys were always dangerous but both defences, and their respective keepers, were on top of the game.
It looked as though a replay was the most likely outcome but with 10 to go we broke down the right wing and a great cross to the back post found an unmarked Turnell who easily headed home to put us through.
All in all a very good, tight game. Well played Fisher but we are more than happy to make the arduous trip to Bedfont Sports in the 24th of the month.
