This coming Saturday Hanworth Villa will face Basingstoke Town in the Southern League Premier South Division.
Hanworth haven’t met many of the teams in our new division before but one we have is Basingstoke Town.
Hanworth Villa have started the season well currently in third winning 9 drawing 3 and losing 3, with the hosts Basingstoke Town, currently 15th winning 4, drawing 8 and losing 3 matches so far.
The teams have only played each other twice competitively before, the first time was in the 2022/2023 Season in The Isthmian South Central Division on Saturday 27th August 2022 at Rectory Meadow where Basingstoke Town run out comfortable 4-0 victors.
The last time the two teams met was again in The Isthmian South Central Division in the reverse fixture played at The Winklebury Football Complex on Non-League Day Saturday 25th March 2023 which Basingstoke Town were on a run of fifteen matches consecutively winning run, likewise Hanworth Villa wasn’t in to bad form themselves winning 3 out of the last 4 noticeably beating Binfield 1-0 and Thatcham Town 2-1 both away from home.
It was a good build up to the match both teams supporters relishing the game, Hanworth Villa were Underdogs but it didn’t show as Villa showed composure and settled into the game and the deadlock was broken at the start of the second half with a goal from Theo Crawford who capitalised and was quickest to react to put the ball in the top right corner.
Basingstoke Town had a few chances themselves but to no avail and couldn’t find the back of the net. Hanworth Villa came away with the three points and a clean sheet to end Basingstoke’s 16 match scoring run and 15 matches winning consecutively.
The end of that season was a nail biter as it was either Basingstoke Town or Walton & Hersham for the league title. Walton & Hersham had the upper hand on goal difference going into last game of season with Basingstoke having to better Walton & Hersham result and with Basingstoke Town winning 3-1 Away to South Park Reigate all Walton & Hersham needed to do was win and they were 2-1 up until heartbreak struck for Walton & Hersham as Thatcham Town snatched a draw in the last minute of stoppage time to send Basingstoke Town up to Southern League Premier South as division champions.
Hanworth Villa eventually made it into the playoffs and reaching the Isthmian South Central playoff final losing to Walton & Hersham 3-1 at The Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub, Tom Bender put the Villains 1-0 up in the first half but second half Walton & Hersham scored 3 unanswered goals to win promotion to the Southern League Premier South.
Villa face Basingstoke at the The Winklebury Football Complex on Saturday 7th November with a 3pm kick off.
