Sam Merson, one of Villa’s most influential players, is stepping back from football to concentrate on other pursuits.
Sam joined Hanworth Villa in 2020, making his debut on 1st September against Lordswood in the FA Cup. He was one of manager Simon Haughney’s first signings in his first full season in charge, and Merson immediately made an impact both on the pitch and in the hearts of the Villa faithful. Merson joined Villa from St Albans City in the National League South, having previously had spells with Redditch, Biggleswade Town, and Boreham Wood U19s.
In six years with the club, Merson made 214 appearances, scoring an incredible 128 goals. His tally included seven hat-tricks, with his best return in a single game coming on 20th March 2024 away at Guernsey, where he netted four times. Merson is also responsible for countless assists with his long and accurate throw in abilities along with pin point accuracy in control and delivering balls into the box.
On Sam’s decision to step back from the game, manager Simon Haughney said:
“Merse, without a doubt, is the best signing I have ever made. He came in at a time when the club was finding it tough on the field and agreed to drop several levels from where he was playing to join us. His impact on and off the field has been immense, and he departs having been fundamental in building the foundations we now have for the club’s future. He will be missed by everyone at the club, and of course Merse and his family are welcome back anytime.”
Posting on his personal social media account, Sam said he was “gutted” to make the decision, but felt the time was right to step back. He also reflected on the Invincibles season with Villa, as well as that memorable goal which earned him several accolades, including the FSA Goal of the Year 2025 and The Non-League Paper Goal of the Season 2024/25.
Everyone at Hanworth Villa wishes Sam all the very best as he embarks on a new chapter in his life. He will be greatly missed, not only for his ability on the pitch, but also for his presence and character.
